Obituary

Virgil Arthur Schroeder, 80, of Owatonna, died Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at Homestead Hospice House in Owatonna, Minnesota. He was born July 25, 1934 in rural Fairfax, Minnesota the son of Arthur and Mildred (Firle) Schroeder. He graduated from Fairfax High School in 1952. He attended Mankato State and earned a degree in Accounting. Virgil married Arlyce Hoppe on August 13, 1955 and in their union had three children, Julie, Kent, and Sara. They resided in Luverne and moved to Owatonna in 1964. Virgil served in the National Guard while in Luverne and later the Reserves. Virgil worked at Concrete Materials in Owatonna as an accountant for 17 years. In 1977, he started his business, Schroeder's Accounting and Tax Service. Arlyce died September 10, 1991. Virgil married Carole (Hudson) Bosshardt on July 20, 1996. Virgil served as a Boy Scout Troop Leader (Troop 351-McKinley Elementary School) for 50 years and was active in troop, District and Gamehaven Council activities. He was instrumental in the National Popcorn Campaign. He served on the District Chair and Camping Chair. He was a Vigil Member (highest honor) of the Order of the Arrow and Order of the Arrow Cook Crew. He received the James. E. West Fellowship, District Award of Merit, Scouter of the Year, and Silver Beaver Award. Virgil was a member of the United Methodist Church, American Legion, Eagles, and Chamber of Commerce. In 1976, he received the Sertoma Service to Mankind Award. Virgil also enjoyed family camping trips, gardening, and traveling. He is survived by his wife, Carole Schroeder of Owatonna; children, Julie Schroeder of Apple Valley, Kent (and Tess) Schroeder of Holmen, WI, and Sara (and Chris) Thompson of Lakeville; grandchildren, Lindsay (and Logan) Merkwae, Brian Schroeder, and Ethan Thompson; step children, Brian (and Marie Levie) Bosshardt of Tempe, AZ and Tim (and Susan) Bosshardt of Hobe Sound, FL; step grandchildren, T.J., Brendan, and Brady Bosshardt; sister, Diane Nelson of Sun City, AZ; brother, Keith (and Judy) Schroeder of Comfrey; brother-in-law, Gordon Funck of Sun City, AZ; extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Arlyce, two infant sons, and sister, Lavon Funck. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Friday, October 10, 2014 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and at United Methodist Church on Saturday from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 11, 2014 at 10:00 AM at United Methodist Church with The Reverend Loren Olson officiating. Interment will be in the Fairview Memorial Park in Fairmont, Minnesota. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Boy Scouts of America or United Methodist Church Scholarship Fund.
