Warren and his four brothers and three sisters were raised on the Manke farm in Deerfield Township and were educated at their nearby little country schoolhouse until 8th grade. Warren and his future wife, Maxine Hartwig, both graduated from Owatonna High School in 1939 and were married on March 26, 1944. The celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary before Mom passed away on May 20, 2011. After their marriage Warren continued to work on the Manke farm and was also employed at his father-in-law, Henry Hartwig''s Buick car dealership (now Expert Tire). Sponsored by Henry, Warren became an Elks lodge member in 1944. In 1946, Warren, and his brothers, Raymond and Ervin built Owatonna Manke Service station at the corner of Rose St and Hoffman Drive (now Sterling Drug). They were in business for 60-years from 1946 to 2006. In the early years the Manke''s sold Shell gas, Packard and Oldsmobile cars and also had a trucking business hauling culverts and pipelines. Later they continued to sell gas, TV''s and appliances to their many customers who appreciated Warren and his brothers pumping their gas, washing their windshields and checking their oil. Dad continued working full-time driving forklift until he was 86 years old and bowled twice a week in his 90''s. Dad, just Wednesday, returned from a two week Canadian fishing trip with Harlie and others where he reported he had one of the best fishing trips ever. Warren and Maxine enjoyed dancing to Lawrence Welk and polka music at the Monterey Ballroom. They also had fun vacationing in Arizona with their many friends and old neighbors from Deerfield the Birds, Biersdorfs, Hoffmans and Kniefels. Dad also took great pride winning his many Owatonna Elks Car Show trophies including the 'People''s Choice Award-overall favorite' 2008-2012 showcasing his maroon classic 1949 Buick. Dad also featured his vintage Buick for two-weeks at the 2012 Steele County Fair. Warren and Maxine''s first home in Owatonna was on Oak Street. In 1955 they built their permanent home at 552 E. University St next to Trinity Lutheran Church where they lived for more than 60 years raising their two daughter Kandus and Krissa. After Maxine died Warren sold their home to Trinity church for their new parking lot. He then moved to Owatonna Southway Manor Apartments. Warren was devoted to his wife Maxine and family and was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church and the Elks club.
