Wayne Ernest Flaten, 70, of Faribault, fondly remembered by fans and friends as 'Beaner', died February 1, 2013 after a lengthy illness with Parkinson''s/Lewy Body disease at Faribault Senior Living surrounded by his family. Wayne was born September 14, 1942 at Saint Lucas Hospital in Faribault, the only child of Ernest and Alvina (Strandemo) Flaten. He grew up in Kenyon and graduated from Kenyon High School in 1960. He continued his education at Winona State University, graduating in 1964 with a B.S in Elementary Education. He was an elementary teacher for 32 years and taught at Stewartville, Northfield, Kenyon and Faribault School Districts. He finished his teaching career at Lincoln Elementary School in Faribault and retired in May 1998. During the summers, he worked at the Kenyon Canning Company. Wayne married Eileen Klemme on December 22, 1965 at Zion Lutheran Church in Stewartville. They had two sons, Jeffrey and Jay. They later divorced in July 1984. On July 24, 1991, Wayne married Audie Willis in Hawaii. They later divorced in 2009. Wayne''s love and passion was baseball. He was head coach of the Kenyon High School Baseball team from 1970-1978 and 1982-1984. He was also the first coach of the Kenyon American Legion Baseball team, guiding the team to the State Tournament in 1971, 1972 and 1974. Over the years, he traveled with his sons to see the Minnesota Twins play at various stadiums including Camden Yards in Baltimore, Royals Stadium in Kansas City and County Stadium in Milwaukee. He visited the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. in 1995 and 1997. He was also an avid Minnesota Gophers fan and was able to travel to several Big Ten football stadiums. He was an active member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kenyon, where he served on the church council, was a Sunday School teacher and an usher. Wayne loved being a grandfather and adored his granddaughters, McKenzie Caroline. He spent much time teaching them to read, going to the park and playing Barbies with them. Wayne also had a special bond with his dog, Buster, who went everywhere with him riding in the front seat of the pick-up. During the summer he also liked to spend time outside taking care of his yard. Wayne is survived by his children, Jeffrey of Dennison; Jay and his wife Jennifer and their children, McKenzie and Caroline of Prior Lake; ex-wife, Eileen Corbin of Waynesville, NC; ex-wife, Audie Willis of Faribault; step-daughter, Nicole Willis-Grimes and her husband Jesse and their children Samuel and Robert of Reno, N.V.; aunt, Eileen 'Sid' Strandemo, and many loving cousins. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home, Kenyon on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. and at First Evangelical Lutheran Church on Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. Funeral services will be held February 9, 2013 at 11 a.m. at First Evangelical Lutheran Church with The Reverend Luther Mathsen officiating. Interment will be in the Kenyon Cemetery in Kenyon. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Kenyon American Legion Baseball Team or the University of Minnesota Foundation in the care of Wayne Flaten.
