Obituary

Willis Olaf Voxland, 86, formerly of Kenyon, died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at Emerald Crest in Burnsville. He was born December 28, 1930 near Kenyon the son of Olaf and Alma (Haugen) Voxland. Willis graduated from Kenyon High School in 1948. He attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, and then later received his degrees in Business and History from the University of Minnesota. He served in the US Marine Corps for two years during the Korean Conflict. Willis' cousin, Mariel Proops, introduced him to his future wife Wanda while she and Wanda were in Nurses' Training School together. Willis married Wanda Knutsen on September 16, 1956, in Graettinger, IA. The couple lived near Kenyon until moving to Grand Marais to enable Willis to start his career with the United States Border Patrol. From the Border Patrol, he moved to the United States Customs and later rose through the ranks of the United States Immigration and Naturalization Services (INS) retiring from the senior levels of the organization. His career moved the family to Arizona, California and Puerto Rico before returning them to Minnesota in 1978. While the children were growing up, many of their trips brought them back to Minnesota and Iowa, so they could spend time with family. Later in life, Willis and Wanda made numerous trips to Hawaii and Colorado to see two of their grown children. Willis is survived by his sons, John (and Gretchen) Voxland, Maui, HI, Wade (and Penny) Voxland of Burnsville; daughter, Alison (and Jeff) Kusch of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren, Evan Voxland, Aaron Kusch, Eric Voxland, Ryan Kusch, Dana Kusch; sister, Clarice (and Calvin) Wolf and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda; daughter, Elisa; brother, Lloyd (and Gerry) Voxland. Visitation will be at Holden Lutheran Church on Saturday from 9:30am to 10:30am. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 11, 2017 at 10:30am at Holden Lutheran Church with The Reverend Heather Culuris officiating. Interment will be in the Holden Lutheran Cemetery.
